The wire armature along with many other types
of various fittings will provide support for the finished clay sculpture.
Aluminum and stainless steel will not react with the clay over a long period
of time. The wire will act as the "bones" of a person or animal. It must
be rigid enough so that the clay will not crack, sag or collapse.
Also the armature must be kept out of the sculptors
way so every attempt at having the wire in the center of the clay should
be taken. Heavy or long extremities will often require a brace extending
from the base to the extremity. The sculpture
will follow the armature example so careful thought must be given.
